Did you know that one third of burglaries occur due to unlocked windows and doors, or locks on windows and doors that are easy to break into? It’s a fact that newer windows and doors provide much greater security for your home, both by means of a deterrent to burglars in the first place, and a physical barrier to entry if someone does attempt a break in. Between 2021-22 there were over 266,283 burglaries in England and Wales alone! Here is how newer options for windows and doors can help make your home more secure in 2023.
UPVC Windows and Doors
There are a lot of factors to consider when it comes to replacing your windows and doors. Understandably you will also be looking at their energy efficiency, ability to retain heat and even how they will fit in with the style of your home. UPVC can come in a range of styles but today we’re focusing on their safety features.
UPVC windows and doors are excellent for fire safety, have internal beading, multiple locking points, hinge protectors, anti-lift pins, and barrel locks with anti-drill designs. So, what does this mean? Older windows may have a plastic seal around where the glass sits which means a burglar would only have to peel back the plastic seal to quietly remove the glass. This is not possible with UPVC due to the multiple locking points, anti-lift pins and barrel locks, so a burglar would have to smash the glass to gain entry to your home, making your home less of a target. This is a massive deterrent as burglars would create a huge amount of noise by smashing the glass which would give you time to get up and raise the alarm – which of course is a burglar’s worst nightmare!
Lastly, UPVC windows and doors are very easily maintained, containing durable glass that is lightweight and easily recycled which if you combine with our Liniar Modlok system we install here at Bingley Windows & Glass, gives your home unrivalled security.
Liniar Modlok systems
If you have or prefer bi-folding or sliding door systems instead, our Liniar Modlok security system can be applied to these as well, or UPVC windows and doors. This allows you to choose from a wider array of bifold or sliding doors and keep security at the top of your list of requirements.

For Bifold doors, the shootbolt locking mechanism designed into each Liniar ModLok™ ensures that it is bolted firmly into the stainless steel track, which maximises security along with its built-in anti-lift features, anti-bump cylinders and optional anti-snap cylinders. Modlok systems also offer three opposing hooks and two shootbolts built into every master door, plus two anti-lift shootbolts on every slave door. This can cover your bi-fold doors upto 7 panes wide!
Sliding/patio doors have their own innovative security system with four hook bolts plus two shootbolts at the top and bottom of the sliding door. You need not worry about style as these hooks are not designed to protrude into the interior decor of your home, and so are child friendly and can be blended seamlessly. You can also add the optional anti snap locking cylinders which can prevent and deter even the most seasoned burglars from attempting to break in!
Other types of glass
Of course, double glazed glass is not your only option when it comes to your home’s security. You can also choose from triple glazed glass which offers two layers or argon gas, and 3 window panes an intruder would have to break through. This also provides a whole new layer of heat retention! Other types include tempered or fired glass which is even more durable! Whilst all glass types are designed to be shatter resistant and provide the most security for your home as possible, tempered and fired can be hit with a hammer and barely notice the difference.
Other types of doors
If you don’t want to opt for French, sliding or bifold doors you could also choose from Composite. Even stronger than UPVC doors, composite doors are comprised from a number of materials in its constitution which makes it harder to break down. You can read our article on the difference between Composite and UPVC doors here.
Other tips and tricks
There are many factors you need to consider aside from your windows and doors, although these do provide the first line of defence. You can also take steps to protect your home by ensuring you have enough curtains and blinds so prospective burglars cannot see into your home or be tempted to want to target it. Additionally you can also invest in window sensors, or home camera systems with spotlights to deter burglars. The more prevention you put in a burglar’s path, the less likely your home is statistically to be burgled.
