You might dream of adding a conservatory to your home, somewhere you can go and relax and read a book, host guests, and flood your home with natural light. Sometimes however, there’s not always an obvious place to put it. Having ‘dead’ space or an awkward space in your garden is no reason not to extend or build a conservatory! Quite often, the traditional or conventional shaped conservatories don’t work in difficult spaces, but fear not, as we can custom design your conservatory to make your dreams a reality. In this article we’re going to discuss how you can transform these areas into a blended part of your home. Let’s dive in!

Conservatory as seen from the garden

1 – Build into L shaped buildings

This can be perfect if you do not have a large amount of garden to work with but you are looking for a cosy area to blend your home into your garden in winter, or provide a cooler space to work or relax in summer. By building into the corner of an L-shaped building, you would not lose out on too much space as you could have a small Edwardian or Gable style conservatory snuggled right into the corner, maximising the space you might not have used otherwise, and at the same time creating a light, airy additional living space.

2 –Maybe you have a raised garden

Many people have a raised garden almost immediately from their house to the rear garden. If however there is a narrow area before the raised section, this can actually be a good space to add a conservatory. The style would usually be a lean-to conservatory, which really does make use of that space that might otherwise especially be a pathway or thorofare. The exterior doors of the conservatory could then open out into the stairs leading to the raised garden area. This will create a seamless transition from your house to the main part of your garden, and fill the underused space.

3 – Move the plants indoors

If you have a flower bed just outside of your back garden, this is no reason to get in the way of you having your dream conservatory or orangery. In fact, you could even transfer the plants into pots and bring the garden indoors to your new conservatory or orangery. If you really want to light up your home and create a sense of balance and nature, these could be relocated to prime sunspots in other rooms adorning your home. Often people come to us and think that just because the area immediately outside of their home isn’t clear, for example an existing patio or grassed area, that they cannot accommodate a conservatory. When in fact, just because you have a flowerbed or something else taking up that space, doesn’t mean it can’t be relocated.

4 – Merge your conservatory into your living room or kitchen

If your back garden really does not have much space to extend into but you want to bring your garden into your home, you could opt for an extension with a small conservatory. This will jet beams of light, brightening up your home as well as extending into space you otherwise probably would not be able to use during winter. There is no need to fear lower temperatures as you can ‘dress’ up your part kitchen or lounge/conservatory with blinds, curtains, warm rugs and furniture. Lesser amounts of space are actually easier to heat, especially with our top tips for keeping your conservatory toasty in the winter months.

5 – Do you have an unused porch?

Like point 3 above, many of our customers initially come to us and think they can’t accommodate a conservatory because there’s an existing part of the building in the space that would otherwise be perfect. A good example of this is an unused or dilapidated porch, either at the front, side or rear of the property. If this is the case, there’s really no reason to let this stop you attaining your dream conservatory. We can transform your porch into a modern conservatory, and even if it’s on the smaller size, the added light that will flood into the rest of your home will instantly make the rest of your house feel fresher and more spacious.
