When it comes to choosing the right doors for your home, you want to get as much value for money as you can, in as many different areas as you can. Whether that be security, energy efficiency, cost or even in matching the style of your home. Historically UPVC has been the number one choice in replacing wooden doors, but there are many benefits to choosing Composite doors also. We’ve put together a small guide that details everything you need to know about the differences between UPVC and Composite doors.

Security

When it comes to security, Composite doors win hands down compared to UPVC. With a broader thickness, 44mm compared to 28mm for UPVC this alone makes it a sturdier choice and harder to break through in the attempt of a burglary. Composite doors are made of a range of materials which are compressed and glued together. This makes them highly resistant to weather damage, and the core of the door is made from polyurethane which is considerably stronger than the Styrofoam core found in UPVC doors.

On the subject of security, all our doors at Bingley Windows & Glass come with a five-point locking system. Each door also comes with one piece keep, two hook and shoot bolts, and two roller cams and deadbolts.
For guaranteed safety, we install anti-snap and anti-bump cylinders, as well as anti-snap handles.

Energy Efficiency

Composite doors have a polyurethane core, meaning they’re not only highly secure, but they’re also thermally efficient due to the high-density thermal insulating qualities of the polyurethane. That’s not to say that uPVC is thermally inefficient, but they don’t have the same insulated qualities of a composite door. Having any kind of draught or area that allows hot air to escape and cold air into your home can mean your boiler has to work overtime to keep your home properly heated, which with the cost of energy bills at the moment is not a good idea. Again, we have to hand it to Composite doors here on the energy efficiency front.

Cost

Cost is an outright win for UPVC in terms of their affordability and availability. For supply costs alone, an average price ranges between £250-£750 for uPVC doors. Composite doors on the other hand can range from £1,150-1800. However, when it comes to how much of an investment Composite doors are in saving you on your energy bills, we would advise you to weigh that up accordingly.

Design

Another flat out win for Composite doors here. Although traditionally UPVC doors were only available in white, they have become more widely available in a variety of colours. However, the vast range of styles, designs and colours of Composite doors is vastly superior to that of uPVC. The vast array of styles and designs which Composite doors are available in means you can easily choose a door to match the style of your home, whether it’s a traditional or contemporary style you’re going for.
