Knowing how to keep your home warm with the rising cost of energy bills can be difficult at the moment. Conflicting advice from the Government, money saving experts such as Martin Lewis and social media can leave you a bit unsure how to save money on your energy bills. So as a professional window and glass installation company, we’re offering our years of experience to give you some practical money saving tips whilst still keeping your home warm.
Make your electrical appliances work for you
On average there are 13 electronic appliances used in a family of four every day. These include TV’s and laptops. By unplugging appliances when they are not in use, and flicking your switches off you can control the flow of electricity so your home is not drawing more than it needs. The most active time people use energy is 6-9pm, so you may find that using your appliances earlier in the day or charging them may be a bit cheaper. You can also reduce the amount of electricity used by investing in energy efficient appliances. New government guidelines have changed from A+, A++, A+++ and so on to a simpler A-G. Investing in more energy efficient appliances will mean when they are in use you won’t need to draw upon the national grid for as much power. Which has advised that homeowners can save up to £336.00 per year by doing so. Similarly, using colder wash cycles and temperatures such as 30 degree washes on your washing machine can save you around £162.00 or 60% of your energy usage per wash.
Install a smart thermostat

Saving money on heating is the age-old argument between keeping your thermostat on certain points of the day or consistently throughout the day. A solution to both however is investing in a smart thermostat which again only draws on power for set times or when you choose to turn it up or down. You can also program your smart thermostat to come on before you wake up and before you get in to ensure you wake up warm which will prepare you for the colder weather outside. If you invest in Google Nest, Google has advised it can save you between 8.4-16.5% of your current energy supply. Hive, the other largest competitor for smart home energy systems estimates approximately £110.00 per year.
Service your boiler
Older boilers may consume more energy to get going. As a result of this, you are still drawing on your energy supply just to power the boiler into warming up before dispensing heat or water through your home. Replacing your boiler is expensive, so it may pay instead to request a boiler servicing company to ensure that your boiler is performing efficiently by cleaning out any deposits that may have built up inside. At roughly £70-100 for a boiler service, ensuring your boiler performs optimally will save you a lot of money. It is hard to say just how much without knowing what currently affects your boiler, but with average cost of energy bills expected to rise to over £3,500 in 2023 the savings could be immeasurable.
Watch your water
Similarly cutting back on excess water by filling a washing up bowl rather than washing the dishes under a running tap can cut back on energy costs. Whilst it can be tempting to spend more time in the shower when it’s cold, this also increases your electric and/or gas usage. By cutting back shower time by just one minute, you could save £45 per year on your water supply and £52 on your energy bills. This is because on average one litre of water is used per minute for showering.
Patch up any cracks or holes
Warming your home when heat is escaping through cracks or holes in your home, skirting boards, your flooring or even the brickwork or plaster is almost pointless as it will continuously draw on your central heating to generate more heat, so seal up those cracks! Our sister company Cobbydale Construction can assist with insulating your roof to ensure no heat escapes. Heat rises, but your energy bills don’t have to as you can save between 15-35% on your bills.
Invest in double glazing and check your windows
Of course as window specialists, we can testify to how much heat escapes your home due to blown window panes, faulty window seals or poor fitting window frames. If you have single glazed windows, there is essentially no protection against the cold from outside so upgrading to double or triple glazed windows would help your home to retain heat. Due to the argon gas that sits between the window pains, cold energy will struggle to penetrate the window panes which helps keep your home warm. We can also assist with replacing faulty window seals, and ensuring your windows fit snugly into the window frames. Estimates on how much you can save depends on your supplier, but a recent study estimates between £105-155.00 per year.
