What Kind of Patio Doors Styles Are Available to Me?

A patio is a great idea; they are superb for relaxing and unwinding if you want to get outside and can be used in a wide range of overhead conditions. Not to mention the value they can add to a property. With a wide range of patio door styles available, here are some of the different options.

French doors

French doors for patios are, understandably, a popular choice. They are double, hinged, and outward opening. Often, their design will consist of large, full-length glass panes separated into square or rectangular frames. This patio door is a great choice for anyone who has restricted doorway space. French doors cannot open as widely as sliding styles, but they equally do not require as much room to be installed or to function within. If your doorway is relatively narrow, and you like their elegance and traditional design, then they are a perfect choice.

Sliding doors

As we just mentioned, sliding doors require a bit more doorway room than their French counterparts. Their design also means that about half of the doorway takes up filled space that cannot be used. A significant advantage they have is that they don’t open outwards. Sliding patio door styles require little to no space in front of or behind them to be effective. Making them the perfect choice for anyone with restricted access to their patio. For example, if your patio isn’t especially big, you’re unlikely to want doors taking up unnecessary space when they’re open. It can be nice to leave patio doors open during the warmer months, and sliding doors allow you to do just that sacrificing any room.

Bifolding doors

A slightly less common choice, bi-folding doors are a great alternative to the two aforementioned, frequently used options. They are, however, becoming increasingly popular, and provide a happy compromise between the sliding and French styles. Unlike sliding doors, bi-folding doors allow the whole doorway to be opened, making their use of space up to twice as efficient. They also have the advantage of being available for much wider door spaces than French doors, meaning that their use of space is more effective than both of the previously mentioned choices. Looking stylish, too, and can add a contemporary feel to your home’s exterior.

Composite doors

A composite door is also perfectly appropriate for your patio. If you prefer to keep things simple, then choosing a single, straightforward door for your patio might be the best option. Single doors have the advantage of requiring relatively little doorway space, but do open inwards or outwards, so require some room in front of or behind them.
