What is a Garden Orangery?

An orangery, also known as an Orangerie, was a room or dedicated building found on the grounds of fashionable residences from the 17th to 19th centuries. In these glass buildings, oranges and other fruit trees were grown and protected during the winter months. An Orangery was a large form of greenhouse or conservatory but very much considered a luxury extension.

A Brief History of Orangeries

The history of the orangery is extremely interesting. It first became popular in the 17th Century, emerging in several European countries such as France, Germany, and The Netherlands. The original use was for the cultivation and tender of orange and lime trees, exotic plants, and shrubs that had been imported from around the world.

As the climate in Europe was significantly different, and colder, to where the imported orange trees and delicate, exotic plants originated, there was an increased need to build a glass structure that would protect, shelter and, aid their growth in the harsher environment.

The architecture and construction of the orangery originated from the Renaissance gardens of Italy; this is because Italy pioneered in producing sufficient expanses of clear glass. As the orangery was built from large amounts of expensive glass, this meant it was not affordable to everyone and thus seen as a symbol of status and prestige amongst the very wealthy.

The historical orangeries were styled like a conservatory, but their main purpose was to provide exotic, imported plants into Europe with shelter and protection. Sometimes, however, they would contain fountains, grottos and, areas to entertain when the weather was particularly unpleasant, cold and, wet outside. The owners would often conduct tours for guests of their garden orangery, where they would all admire the fruits and architecture.
