A porch is a small room located in front of the entrance to a building. The word ‘porch’ derives from the old french word ‘porche’ and Latin phrase meaning ‘passage’ – which makes a great segway into our next point. What are the different types of porches? Like with many things, there are a number of different types: an Arizona room, screened porch, sleeping porch, rain porch, portico, loggia, veranda, lanai, sun porch, and a stoop. We’ll cover what our favourite style of porches is below.

3 Different Types of Porch

Screened Porch

This type of porch is also referred to as a ‘screened-in porch’. It is a porch that has been built or altered to be enclosed with screens and effectively creates an outdoor room.

Sleeping Porch

A sleeping porch has been built or modified to be a semi-outdoor sleeping area; it can be an ordinary open porch or screened with or without windows.

Veranda

This style of porch is usually very large and encompasses the entire outside of a structure or building.

What are the benefits of having a porch?

Oftentimes when we’re modernising our home, there are various types of renovations we undertake such as doing up the bathroom, redecorating the kitchen, or deciding to spruce up the bedrooms. But, have you ever considered modernising or extending the porch at the front of your home? Here are a few reasons why you should consider modernising your front porch.

Additional space

One of the great things about a porch is that it creates more space and storage within your home. In this designated area, you can safely store coats, shoes, and umbrellas on hooks or racks. Alternatively, you can use this space for decoration and customisation by adding indoor plants that perhaps need a cooler environment.

Create a great first impression

Having a porch modernises the exterior of your home. It can seamlessly blend with the original build but adds that additional ‘wow!’ factor, injecting a little of your personality while not taking away from the original character of the building.

Alongside this, porches offer practicality to your home. It is an area in which homeowners or guests enter through a front door and creates a defined separation from the outside and the rooms within the house.

Offers extra security

When you have a porch it adds an additional layer of security. A porch creates another barrier between your home and the outside world, which adds a little extra protection to you, your family, and your possessions.
